When we hear the word teambuilding, many of us think of a weekend at a cabin that’s barely a hut, a dreary evening drinking wine in paper cups, or a sports day in the car park in front of the company building.

Yet rather than being just some mandatory annual exercise, teambuilding should be time that is spent effectively and can be enjoyed by all staff.

If it is done well, teambuilding also helps to break down barriers between managers and employees while fostering a sense of belonging and trust. If staff feel that they are an important part of a bigger whole, they will be motivated and view their work very differently.

Teambuilding, when successful, bonds the workforce, improves teamwork, motivates and energises employees, and increases their performance at work.

3 tips for successful teambuilding

1. Do your homework

Your first step is to know what your colleagues and employees expect and enjoy

If you want to make sure that no one gets bored at the event, put together a programme tailored to suit your staff. Ask them to describe what they consider to be the ideal teambuilding event and plan it around those ideas. You can conduct an online survey, use questionnaires or hold a joint meeting.

Our tip: Involve employees in the preparations. If they feel that they have contributed to the planning of the event, they will be more motivated to participate.

2. Set yourself a target

A specific, clear teambuilding target is a prerequisite for success. You must have attended events in the past that you felt were a waste of time. The reason for that was probably that the teambuilding lacked a predefined goal.

If you establish in advance what you want the teambuilding to accomplish, you will find it much easier to plan the agenda and activities.

Here are some tips on what to focus on during teambuilding:

  1. Group activities, games and competitions improve communication and teamwork.
  2. Brainstorming and discussions increase motivation and creativity.
  3. A small gift and/or recreational activities, such as a spa, sports or cultural event, are a nice way of saying thank you to staff and rewarding them for a successful year of work.

Our tip: Commit time to a good cause!

Visit a nursing home and organise a nice programme for the residents there. Walk the dogs at a local shelter. Or do some something like picking up litter in the woodland outside the town.

Nothing builds a team more than coming together for a volunteer activity that also benefits the local community

Have personalised gifts made to order!

Gifts for each employee are another element integral to a good teambuilding experience. Whether you choose a calendar, diary or other useful items or electronics, don’t forget to have them printed with your company logo.

3. Make a plan

Whether you’re planning a full weekend of teambuilding or an event lasting a few hours, always draw up a detailed timetable of specific activities. Ideally, you should plan one central activity and build a few others around it. Having no plan is a recipe for chaos. And chaos makes for an unhappy, demotivated workforce.

How do we at Lyreco do teambuilding?

We show everyone that we are all on the same team – in company colours with the company logo!

The psychological aspect plays a huge part in creating a team-oriented mindset.

For example, if all team members are wearing the same colour t-shirt with the same logo, regardless of their role or position within the company, then everyone involved will feel a sense of equality and togetherness

Create a design for your team

Popular teambuilding activities include:

  • go-karting,
  • escape rooms,
  • wine or coffee tasting,
  • cookery courses,
  • problem-solving activities,
  • movie nights,
  • quizzes and competitions.

Throughout the whole teambuilding exercise, don’t forget to lay on refreshments, which are part and parcel of a successful event. Make sure a wide selection of food and beverages is available on the tables.
