World Environment Day - Time for Generation Restoration

World Environment Day has been held on June 5th of every year since 1974 and serves to engage governments, businesses, and citizens to address important environmental issues.

It offers a global platform for inspiring positive change and allows people to think about the way they consume the world’s resources; for businesses to develop greener models; for farmers and manufacturers to produce more sustainably; for governments to invest in repairing the environment; for educators to inspire students to take action; and for the youth to build a greener future.

Every year there is a different theme to World Environment Day; in 2019 it was Beat Air Pollution which is a very important theme in Thailand. Each year a different city hosts the theme of the year and in 1988, Bangkok proudly hosted World Environment Day with the theme, “When People Put the Environment First, Development Will Last”.

“Generation Restoration”, Theme for 2021

World Environment Day on June 5th 2021 will kick off the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration which is a global mission to revive billions of hectares, from forests to farmlands, from the top of mountains to the depth of the sea With healthy ecosystems can we enhance people’s livelihoods, counteract climate change and stop the collapse of biodiversity. The theme this year is “Generation Restoration” and the host is Pakistan.

This is a very important theme, our planet’s ecosystems are under pressure, every three seconds, the world loses enough forest to cover a football pitch and over the last century we have destroyed half of our wetlands.

As much as 50 percent of our coral reefs have already been lost and up to 90 percent of coral reefs could be lost by 2050, even if global warming is limited to an increase of 1.5°C. Ecosystem restoration means preventing, halting and reversing this damage – to go from exploiting nature to healing it.

Lyreco wishes to be a part of creating awareness about the changing global environment to encourage change for the better and we are focusing on many areas of sustainability which affect the environments.
