Coffee culture in the workplace

For many of us, making a cup of coffee has become a fast, automated process. In-between meetings and phone calls, we scurry off to the coffee machine in the kitchen. We check how much coffee is in there, add water to the reservoir, and press the button without even thinking about it. Moments later, we’re headed back to our desk with a fresh, fragrant cup of coffee. Rinse and repeat several more times over the course of the day.

But the thing is, we sip away at our coffee while we're going about our other activities, so we never get to enjoy it properly. Often we don’t even notice that we have finished it. Or we realise that it has gone cold while we’re working on something. And cold white coffee is no one’s cup of tea.

Let’s change that! Let’s be part of a small revolution in coffee drinking

Coffee is not just a way of staying awake and productive. An entire coffee culture has recently coalesced around this popular caffeinated beverage.

It is over coffee that people commune with their colleagues, customers and business partners, and in doing so build up trust and relationships. And not just in the office, but also during digital meetings.

Drinking coffee as a ritual

Various statistics show that two out of three employees are relatively heavy coffee drinkers consuming an average of three coffees a day. In most cases, they wait until they reach the office before having their first cup.

Apart from the obvious benefits of boosting concentration and increasing productivity, coffee drinking is also associated with higher employee satisfaction.

In the same way that drinking tea is held sacred in Asia, you too can make drinking your favourite caffeinated beverage a ritual. We devise rituals to reflect who we are. They might be inspired by the world around us or made to suit our specific needs. They are intended to instil pleasant feelings, mental well-being and stability into our lives.

It doesn’t just take much to turn the act of drinking coffee into an experience. You might have a favourite cup that you use every morning to drink your first coffee of the day, or you might choose to sit down with colleagues for a nice chat or drink your coffee in silence as you browse popular websites.

The kitchen – the heart of any company

Our grandmothers all knew how important the kitchen was in family life. So it comes as no surprise that the kitchen at a company or business has become a hub of social life and corporate culture.

Our tip: Coffee stations

Set up coffee stations by the coffee machine with everything your staff need to flavour their favourite beverage:

  • milk
  • coffee creamer
  • sugar or other sweeteners

Keep energy flowing throughout the day

What would a kitchen be without food? Stock your company kitchen with snacks for employees and visitors. Offering something sweet to go with coffee will be appreciated by your staff and give them an energy boost throughout the working day
